Guidelines for students

What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is an attempt to pass off the work of others (in particular the writing of others) as one's own. The most obvious type of plagiarism is copying whole articles, sections, paragraphs or whole sentences from other publications without acknowledgement.

Another more subtle, but equally unacceptable form of plagiarism is taking source material from one language (Chinese) and translating it into another language (English), then presenting the translation as the student’s own work.

Students sometimes unintentionally plagiarize because they are not aware of the very stringent international rules that apply. Students should be aware that even the use of a few words or paraphrasing (without actually copying any words at all) may constitute plagiarism if the source is not acknowledged. If material is taken from a source, there should be proper quotes and acknowledgements.

Proper use of source material

In academic writing, source material, including online resources, such as websites, electronic journals or articles in an online newspaper, must be properly acknowledged. Mild cases of failure to acknowledge would be regarded as poor academic writing. Serious cases of failure to acknowledge, especially where there appears to be the intention to mislead the reader about the originality, would constitute plagiarism.

Disciplinary guidelines for plagiarism

The School of Foreign Languages adopts the following guidelines and penalties for all courses:

1.      For a first offense in a minor assignment, a mark of zero will be given for that component of the course. For a second offense in a minor assignment, a mark of zero will be given for the entire course.

2.      For a first offense in a major assignment, a mark of zero will be given for the entire course. Course instructor will clarify to students what constitutes a minor/major assignment.

3.      Courses must be retaken in which the final grade is failure due to plagiarism. Make up exams will not be permitted.

4.      The instructor is responsible to notify the student as early as possible of the offense, penalty, and procedures for retaking the course where necessary.

5.      Students who are penalized for alleged plagiarism may appeal in writing with full explanation within seven days to the Dean. If the appeal has merit, the Dean will submit the appeal to the appeals committee for further review. The appeals committee will respond according to the following procedure.

a.       The appeals committee is comprised of three faculty members and two representatives of the student body from the School of Foreign Languages.

b.      The appeals committee will meet twice in the middle and end of each semester (as necessary) to consider student appeals.

c.       A student appeal must be presented in writing at least two days prior to a scheduled appeals committee meeting. Meeting dates will be posted on the School of Foreign Languages website.

d.      Students may appeal only when the potential outcome is a failure for the course in question. No appeal will be entertained for failure of a specific assignment.

e.       The appeals committee will determine whether the appeal warrants an oral review with student and instructor present.

f.       All decisions of the appeals committee will be final.

g.      The case is closed if no appeal is received after the specified period.
